Our Coaching Staff...

Our staff is composed of very competent high school and college distance coaches who have trained some of the best runners in their area, their district, state and the country! See these impressive bios.

Jim Smith - Director Camp Director, Coach Jim Smith - Coach Smith is a successful Shrewsbury High School and college XC and track coach. Since 2003 his teams have won 11 League XC Championships in very competitive Massachusetts. One of his latest stars, John Murray, was the Massachusetts State Record holder in XC and also won state records in the 2 mile event. Further, he was chosen theGatorade Runner of the Year in his senior year. Murray just graduated from Georgetown where he won the IC4A XC race in 2014. Murray now coaches at the Northeastern University in Boston. Other athletes Smith coached won state championships, placed at New Englands and qualified for the Footlocker Nationals in XC in San Diego. A second super standout from Shrewsbury and RMXCC is Andrew Kaye. He competed in the 10K at Div II Nationals (finals) and his 2022 XC team won Nationals.  Andrew was first alternate with a time of 29:25!  At the Colorado School of Mines, Andrew graduated early but with covid and redshirting, he still has two years to run on the team while he earns his PhD! Coach Smith is an experienced teacher and knows the value of team work and loyalty--both of which made him a successful runner in high school (3 state titles) and in college (5 time All-Ivy at Harvard and Steeple Chase record holder there). Coach Smith has run camps for more than 15 years. Saying that coaching is his passion would be an understatement!
Chris Smith - coach

Coach Chris Smith - Chris is entering his 15th year as Assistant Camp Director. Chris is a veteran teacher in Brookline, Massachusetts as well as an accomplished runner, competing at Colorado and Vanderbilt. He, too, has coached champions at every level, at Emory and Vanderbilt and Brookline High where his teams won two state XC titles. Among his credits are the Pike's Peak Assent--14.5 miles up to 14,200 ft elevation.; 35th in the prestigious Philadelphia Marathon, winner of many local road races and competitor in the Boston, Chicago and New York marathons. Chris has developed into a cyclist in the past few years and enjoys all endurance sports. His enthusiasm for competitive running inspires runners of all ages and abilities to achieve their personal bests.

Coach Tonya McDonough - Tonya is among the most decorated of all our coaches here at Rocky Mountain XC Camp--we are indeed honored to have her share her coaching skills with our runners! Tonya has been selected as "Coach of the Year" in XC 11 times in Iowa (at the city-wide level, conference and state levels)! A veteran teacher in North Liberty, Iowa, Tonya is a fantastic coach who gets things done while being beloved by her runners--and, four teams of hers won State Championships in Cross Country. We welcome Coach Tonya and hope this will be the beginning of many more camps!

Dan Mortimer - Dan has been a camper or on staff here at RMXCC for 7 of the past 9 years. After his stint as captain of my XC team in Shrewsbury, Dan led his high school XC team to 3rd place in the Massachusetts State XC Championships and was selected as a League All-Star numerous times in XC and Track. He recently graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute where he captained (twice) the cross country teams. Dan is extremely skilled at the details in coaching fine runners to reach their potential helping to make all our staff and campers better runners! After graduation he is now working in Westboro, MA. Welcome back, Dan!
Marcia Smith - Mrs. Coach, as we call her, has been very involved in helping with the planning and execution of our camp for the past 10 years. Mrs Coach was a varsity basketball player in college (Simmons, in Boston) a few years back so she knows what competitive drive is all about! Now she assists wherever she is needed. And, she is loved by all!
Andrew Kaye--Andrew was one of the most outstanding distance runners ever to come out of my Shrewsbury High School cross country and track programs.  He won Leagues in all events and XC, at Districts he was close to winning, competed at States every year, and outdoor Nationals, too, in the 2 mile. Clocking times of 4:26 and 9:27 as well as 15:57 for 5K at the illustrious Brown Invitational in 2016, Captain Kaye led his teams to half a dozen League Championships during his four years at SHS.  Presently, Andrew is attending the Colorado School of Mines Graduate School. Andrew has been selected as a USTFA All-Academic All-American for his 29:25 10K at Mount Sac Relays in April 2021. Andrew was on the 2022 XC National Championship team as first alternate having run 29:25!
Cami Mac--Cami will be joining us as a camp counselor for the second time this year. But she is a veteran of the camp and is presently a student at Iowa State University.
